Many people have a flower garden planted and now it looks pretty and lush. When is the right time to plant a flower garden? The right time to plant a flower garden depends on where you live. The climate in your region will affect when you can plant your flower garden. In most cases, flower gardens need to be planted sometime between late spring and early fall.
If you live in a place with a warm, dry climate, such as the Sonoran Desert or Sahara Desert, flower gardens are not recommended. The lack of humidity, heat and rainfall will stunt your plants and flowers. If you do decide to grow a flower garden in this area, be sure to plan for a high percentage of sunshine. Some flowers will not grow in areas that receive less than 60% sun exposure.
Some flowers are best planted from seed. A small flower garden is fine, but if you are looking to plant a full bloom, then you will want to purchase a plant that will grow tall. For flower gardening beginners, I suggest starting with a small flower garden. The small plants will provide everything your flower garden needs to grow big and strong. The following are some flower plants that are best started from seeds.
African Violets – These flowers will bloom in late summer through early fall. They come in a wide variety of colors such as lavender, yellow, blue, purple and red. When can we start planting African violets in a flower garden? Late spring or early fall is perfect.
Basil – This is a beautiful perennial flower which is also great as a landscaping plant. It grows easily and has a thick stem. When can we plant basil? Late spring through fall is the perfect time for planting basil. Keep in mind that you should dig the hole a few inches larger than the root ball of the flower. Then you will be ready to plant it.
Chrysanthemums – This flower can last for several years if maintained properly. It comes in a wide variety of color choices including white, pink, light purple, orange and even lime green. When can we plant Chrysanthemums in a flower garden? Late spring through late summer is the perfect time for planting chrysanthemums. You can place them on an outcropping of rock or fence post if you do not have a flower garden. Just remember that you will need to repot every year.
Sunflowers – These flowers are very easy to grow. All you need is about four feet of ground to grow these beauties. You can plant them up in a flower garden or on your patio if you like. The key to a successful sunflower garden is to prepare the soil correctly.
Most flower gardens are planted with a purpose. Some are for decoration and others to add color. Flower gardens do not need to be planted with a distinct purpose. A flower garden can easily become a part of your landscape if you take the time to look around and find the perfect flower garden site. Just remember, when can we start planting outside flowers?
Spring – Flowers bloom in spring, so this is the best time to plant them. If you live in a climate that experiences winter, consider early spring as the perfect flower garden planting season. The flowers will come out more colors and vibrant than ever before. However, it is important to dig the flower garden up prior to the flower season in order to preserve the flowers. The cold weather will kill the flower buds and the flowers will not last as long.
Summer – Beautiful summer flowers bloom at their prettiest during the summer. The heat helps to ward off insects and bugs that may destroy your flowers. This is also the height of insect activity so you will want to remove any standing water prior to flowering. Remember, if the flowers die out, the insects will too!
Fall – When can we start planting flowers outside? Autumn is the time of year when the flowers begin to change color and appear to be dying out. This is the perfect time to dig up your flower garden and bring it inside to protect from the rain. Many people choose to take the plants with them during this time as well. Just remember to water the plants well to help them through the harsh winter months. Once the flowers are fully developed and you have maintained the proper moisture level for your plants, you may be ready to flower in your flower garden.
